Running for the 'Law outside of the Classroom' Initiative

Op 20 oktober zal ik de Semimarathon van Luik lopen om het 'Recht buiten de Klas' initiatief van de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid van Radboud Universiteit te ondersteunen.

Met dank aan het 'Recht buiten de Klas' initiatief krijgen onze studenten een veelzijdige opleiding door deel te nemen aan Moot Courts of de Radboud Law Clinic.

Deelname aan een Moot Court helpt studenten waardevolle vaardigheden te ontwikkelen op het gebied van onderzoek, argumentatie en publiek spreken. De Law Clinic biedt studenten praktijkervaring in het oplossen van echte maatschappelijke problemen en samenwerking met organisaties in het veld.

Deelnemende studenten beschrijven deze ervaringen altijd als het nuttigste deel van hun opleiding.

Helaas zullen deze initiatieven, door onlangs aangekondigde enorme bezuinigingen op het Nederlandse hoger onderwijs, volgend academisch jaar niet worden gefinancierd.

Studenten zullen dus zelf de bijbehorende kosten moeten dragen! Echter is dit niet mogelijk voor de meeste 'derdelanders' en eerste generatie studenten.

Ikzelf kon al 20 jaar geleden als een 'derdelands' student profiteren van zulke mogelijkheden dankzij royale overheidsfinanciering. Dit heeft mijn horizon verbreed en heeft mij geholpen een echte wereldwijde professional te worden, eerst in de non-profitsector en daarna in de academische wereld.

Het zou oneerlijk zijn om de nieuwe generatie universiteitsstudenten deze kansen te onthouden!

Help ons om onze studenten op te leiden tot veelzijdige professionals en wereldburgers!

On 20 October I will run the Semi-Marathon of Liege to support the 'Law outside of the Classroom' initiative of the Radboud Law Faculty. I haven't run a semi-marathon in almost 15 years!!!

The 'Law outside of the Classroom' initiative allows our students to receive all-round education by participating in Moot Courts or the Radboud Law Clinic.

Participating in a Moot Court helps students develop invaluable skills of legal research, argumentation and public speaking.

Doing a Law Clinic offers students first-hand experience in solving real-life societal problems and cooperating with organizations in the field. 

Participating students always describe these experiences as the most useful part of their degree.

Unfortunately, due to recently announced huge budget cuts to Dutch higher education these initiatives will not be funded next academic year.

So students will have to cover related costs themselves! Most 'third-country' and first generation students cannot afford this.

I myself could benefit from such opportunities already 20 years ago as a 'third-country' student thanks to generous state funding. This has opened up my horizons and helped me to become a truly global professional, first in the non-for-profit sector and then in the academia.

It would be unfair to deprive the new generation of university students of these opportunities!!!

Help us to educate our students to become all-round professionals and world citizens!
