Creating an exciting children’s book that also contains the results of scientific research into dyslexia: that is the goal of behavioural scientist Liesbeth Tilanus, PhD candidate at Radboud University and special needs educator at Marant. She researches the effectiveness of the current treatment methods for dyslexia and wants to share the results with as many people as possible, especially those with children. If the crowdfunding is successful, the book will be created in collaboration with a professional illustrator and author.

Een kroon voor een kanjer (A crown for a champ) will be an exciting book with many illustrations and accessible text, aimed at children aged 8 to 11 years. It is the story of Raf, a boy with dyslexia. He has to hold a school presentation about dyslexia and takes part in an exciting adventure with his friends on an island. The treatment method for dyslexia and the results of Tilanus’ research are addressed in a playful way.

Tilanus: “It will be a recognisable story about the daily educational practise for children with and without dyslexia. The book will contribute to the self-confidence of children with dyslexia. It is even valuable for children without dyslexia: they learn what it’s like when reading and spelling do not come naturally to you.”

Liesbeth wants to publish this book because she believes in sharing scientific research with children in a way they can understand. A children’s book is an exceptional way for her to teach children more about dyslexia in an accessible and fun way. The book is mindful of the needs of readers with dyslexia: the line and letter spacing is modified, making it easier to read.

Help realise Een kroon voor een kanjer

At the moment, the story is nearly finished. However, €12,500 is necessary to begin production of the book. Would you like to help us spread the knowledge of dyslexia to a broader audience? If so, please donate via this site. You will receive a copy of the book as a thank-you for contributions of €15 or more, but any amount is welcome. Your donation goes entirely to the production of the book.

If the project turns out to yield more money than it costs, this will be donated to a different charity related to dyslexia, yet to be determined.

The project “Een kroon voor een kanjer: het eerste wetenschappelijke kinderboek over dyslexie” (a crown for a champ: the first scientific children’s book about dyslexia) is a collaboration between Radboud University, Marant, and Uitgeverij Zwijssen. The book was written at AVI Level M5 (AVI is a Dutch system for individualising education). Liesbeth Tilanus works as a special needs educator for Marant and at Radboud University, she conducts her PhD research into the effectiveness of the current treatment method for dyslexia.
