Help make a unique democracy game a reality!
The only real way to learn how democracy works is to experience it first-hand. This is why researchers at Radboud University have developed a unique game – Demos – that gives players an understanding of how democracy works in real life. To manufacture the game in large quantities, the creators are now asking for your help.
Should European borders be open? Should the police be given more authority? Play Demos and experience first-hand how personal and public interests can clash in these types of issues, as well as how different democratic models can produce different results.
“The game can be played at various levels, making it suitable for all ages. It can also be played anywhere, at home or in a classroom,” says political philosopher Stefan Schevelier, one of the game’s creators. Two years of work was invested in Demos, to ensure that it makes the essence of democracy palpable while also being fun to play. Schevelier adds: “Earlier testing sessions were successful, people found the game fun to play and educational at the same time.”

Lesson materials for students of voting age
In conjunction with LesLab, a package of lesson materials has been developed that provides career orientation and support specially for intermediate vocational (MBO) students. “Right now there are actually hardly any materials available for these students, despite the fact that many of them reach voting age during the programme.” The game is ideal for use in social studies or history classes leading up to the elections for the House of Representatives on 15 March.

Stefan Schevelier continues: “Playing the game gives people a genuine understanding of the impact of certain decisions within a democracy. Given the positive response, it would be fantastic if the game were available to many more people before the coming elections, young and old alike. But this can only happen if Demos actually goes into production.” Schevelier concludes by saying, “We are hoping for support from all those in favour of democracy. Any contribution, however big or small, is welcome.”
