Radboud100: joining forces for a better world

The anniversary provided the motivation for starting Radboud100, but even after the anniversary year, Radboud100 continues to be relevant. Each year, we select significant projects to which Radboud100 can contribute.

Radboud100 brings together people who want to give extra power to future-proof projects and meaningful initiatives, such as research into strengthening dikes with more varied vegetation, or creating grants that allow refugees to study in freedom. And these two projects are only the beginning. Radboud100 aims to make much more possible in the next century. Which is why we cordially invite everyone to join our close-knit network.

Which projects does Radboud100 support?

Groundbreaking research in the field of brain, behaviour and technolog

Prof Esther Aarts leads research into the link between gut and brain. Esther wants to find out how we can use food to prevent depression and dementia: ‘How nice would it be if we could use food to keep our brains healthy?’

Dr Lennart Verhagen is working with his research group on Focused Ultrasound Stimulation, a technology that can treat diseases and disorders without invasive interventions in the brain. Focused Ultrasound Stimulation (FUS) is an innovative technology that is changing both the medical world and scientific research. ‘I want to develop this technology further, to contribute to the treatment of people with cancer or Parkinson's disease.’

Helping refugees to study in freedom
Turkish national Emine Bala fled to the Netherlands with her family in 2022. She followed the Radboud Welcomes Newcomers programme and embarked on a language course so that she could learn Dutch as quickly as possible. With financial support from Radboud100, she will be starting the Master’s programme in Dutch as a Second Language at Radboud University in September. Her dream is to teach Dutch to other refugees. “This country has given me so much, and now I want to give something back.”

Future Dikes; species-rich types of vegetation and a future-proof dike
In the ‘Future Dikes’ project, we examine the way in which vegetation on the dike contributes to biodiversity and how this can better protect us from high water, which is hardly a luxury in a country where one third of the land is below sea level. Choosing plants with diverse root systems can make the dike stronger.

As a result, the dikes are not only able to protect us from high water but they are also more drought-resistant. In addition to contributing to the reinforcement of the dike, the diversity of vegetation is also good for biodiversity. The dike provides a setting for rare plant and insect species. And it’s obviously a feast for the eyes! A greater understanding is required of erosion resistance, and the design, assessment and management of species-rich dikes. To put it simply, more research is needed and you can help to support this by donating to Radboud100.
